The Job Guide

A subway-tile backsplash, set like a pro.

The short answerTo tile a backsplash, turn off the power and remove outlet covers, clean the drywall, and snap a level line. Spread premixed mastic (or modified thinset) with a 3/16" V-notch trowel, set the tile with spacers, and cut around outlets. Let it cure 24 hours, grout, sponge off the haze, then caulk where the tile meets the countertop and cabinets. Most kitchens take a weekend.

A backsplash is one of the most-searched DIY upgrades, and one of the biggest visual returns per square foot. Here's the kit and method for clean, level lines.

The Method

Step by step, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Power off & prep

Turn off the breaker, remove outlet covers, clean and degrease the wall, and patch dings.

  2. 02

    Layout

Snap a level line one tile up from the counter and dry-lay a row to center the pattern and avoid slivers.

  3. 03

    Spread adhesive

Comb mastic with the V-notch trowel in 2–3 sq ft sections, ridges in one direction.

  4. 04

    Set tile

Press tiles in with a slight twist. Use spacers or clips and stagger each row by half a tile.

  5. 05

    Cut around outlets

Mark and cut notches, and use box extenders if the tile pushes the outlets back.

  6. 06

    Grout

After 24 hours, pull the clips and float the grout diagonally.

  7. 07

    Clean & caulk

Sponge to shape the joints, buff off the haze, then caulk the counter and cabinet edges.

Good Questions

Before you start.

Mastic or thinset for a backsplash?

Premixed mastic is fine for ceramic subway tile on dry drywall. Use modified thinset for glass, stone, large tile, or a wet wall.

Do I need backer board?

Not normally. Clean, sound drywall is fine behind a kitchen backsplash.

Where does the tile stop?

Usually at the underside of the upper cabinets, or a clean end line such as the edge of the counter or the cabinet sides.
